The F399 began the Italian marque's return to winning ways in Formula 1. Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine scored a total of six wins, and aided by Finnish ace Mika Salo (who deputised for the injured German at six races) they claimed the Constructors' title for the first time in 16 years.
The F399 was not a revolutionary model, but a clever development of the F300, retaining the same layout with its distinctive high exhausts, and adding a third front shock absorber to control roll, electronically-controlled power steering and newly designed rear suspension. The 048 engine for 1999, was lighter than the 047, with a little more horsepower and it had enviable reliability. The engineers had further refined the aerodynamics, reducing drag while increasing downforce.
After scoring wins at Imola and Monte Carlo, Michael Schumacher injured his leg in an accident at Silverstone and Salo joined the team. Michael returned to contest the last two Grand Prix and to help the team and Eddie Irvine who was still in the running for the Drivers' title, after a successful season opener as Australia and later wins in Austria, Germany and Malaysia.
Unfortunately, Ferrari lost out on the Drivers' title (to Mika Hakkinen for McLaren) in the last race at Suzuka for the third season in a row.
