| Red Stripe being painted onto Front Grill. (Badge Removed for Painting.) |
Car: 1991 VW Golf Mk2
Colour: Marine Blue
VW Golfs always look good with the twin headlight grill and by adding a red stripe - you get the instant classic look of the GTi.
Modifying the front grill on any Mk2 Golf, is one of the things that can most transform the looks of the car. Although many Golf owners will add a twin headlight grill to their cars to make them look more like a GTi, many GTi owners are just as likely to convert their cars to single headlight grills or even VW Jetta grills with square headlights to suit their own unique looking cars and tastes!
The GTi's were not the only cars to come with the twin headlight grills, they could also be found on VW Golf 'Drivers' and VW Golf 'Ryders'. The difference was the GTi Grills had a red stripe on them to indicate their higher and sportier status.
A very cheap and easy modification to achieve, it's worth painting the red strip on your Golf, whether you have single or twin headlights.
We normally paint the front grills with Humbrol red enamel paint, as this seems to stand the test of time, and does not require any undercoat or primer.
It is important just to rub the surface slightly with some fine wet & dry paper prior to painting though, just to 'key' the surface.
Then it's simply a case of painting on the stripe, we find it is always best to apply two coats, leaving the necessary length of time between coats as described on the tin.
As you can see we have also chosen to paint the VW badge in black, matching the already smoked indicators. This put the emphasis on the lights, rather than the badge, giving a meaner look!
