| 1991 VW Golf Mk2 with GTi Wheel Arches, prior to painting of the Front Grill! |
Car: 1991 VW Golf Mk2
Colour: Marine Blue
The addition of a set of plastic wheel arches makes a nice subtle difference in the Golf's looks/appearance! This is one of the most important parts to add to any basic Golf, if you want to even think of pretending your car is a GTi.
We purchase this second hand set of 4 plastic GTi wheel arches on ebay for £10.50 hoping they would be okay when they arrived.
The steel wheel arches on this car were in very good condition, in fact the whole bodywork of the car was superb throughout. This meant we should be able to attach the plastic wheel arches easily enough once they had arrived.
Fitting was straight forward, and we simply riveted the kit on to the car aligning and using the wholes provided where possible.
A couple of extra rivets were used in any places where the previous owner had drilled the plastic arches (thus hiding the holes), and also in any places where they were needed to give a much better/tighter fit.
Once fully fitted, they were completely flush around the top of each arch, and we did not use any sealants or tapes to help hold them in place or secure them to the car. We were glad about this as they looked like they had been fitted from new this way.
The rivets we used were a larger size than we originally intended to use, but they did give us better results and we knew the arches would remain secure this way.
We painted the rivet heads black at a later date, so that they would no longer be quite so obvious.
Adding the wheel arch trims had taken the car from looking like a basic model Golf, into something a bit more sporty. We had already tinted the lights, but as you will see from other pictures of this car in this site, we also painted a red stripe on the twin headlight grill, added alloy wheels and tyres, and painted the brakes etc, thus turning it into a bit of a GTi lookalike!
