| Undercoat Paint Applied. Will Smooth Pior to Top-Coating |
Car: 1991 VW Golf Mk2
Colour: Marine Blue
Most old cars, will usually have suffered from some sort of knocks/bumps/dents to the bodywork at some point during their life. This VW Golf Mk2 was no exception!
The Golf's bodywork was in very good condition generally when we got it. Although it had had a very light knock to the front bumper that had resulted in a small amount of very minor damage to the indicators and front wing.
We were able to swap the indicators, with those in a mk2 golf that we were about to scrap, but as we did not intend to use this vehicle immediately, we decided to attempt to repair the wing ourselves!
After removing the front grill, headlight and front bumper from the car, the task was going to prove far easier.
The wing was easily knocked back to its correct position with the use of a large rubber mallet. This would allow for re-fitment of the front grill without the two catching each other anymore.
The smallest dints were in the wing and these were filled and sanded down with wet & dry paper prior to painting in undercoat. The undercoat was also smoothed with very fine wet & dry paper, prior of the application of the topcoat.
The blue paint used was a can of Halfords own brand paint, supposed to be the correct colour match for this car!
Unfortunately, the Halfords paint even when buffed up a few weeks later, can still be seen.
Although we had removed the original damage and resulting corrosion, the Halfords paint was a disappointment, when it came to the final result. Apart from that we considered it a job well done.
Since repairing the front wing on this car, we have now always gone direct to the car manufacturers when needing paint for any vehicle. The results of doing this has been far better colour matching to original paint. Please see the pages in this site where we have repaired and painted the bonnet on this VW Golf, with an almost invisible finish.
Not only do we now insist on manufacturers paint where possible, we have also found, it can even be the cheapest too!
